The village of Tranchovitsa is in Northern Bulgaria and is located in the Municipality of Levski, District of Pleven.

The village is in the central part of the Danube Plain close to the Osam River. Most of Tranchovitsa is situated on the slopes of high hills facing the Osam River. The Osam River is known for recreation and fishing.

Today about 578 people live in the village of Tranchovitsa.

The village is 20 miles south of the Danube River 30 miles east of the City of Pleven and 13 miles northwest from the Town of Levski.

The village is the holder of the Golden Print Award for a unique European settlement. This distinction is given to certain European cities and villages because of ancient historical heritage and unique natural resources. The award was presented by the “Official Representation of Unique Settlements in Europe” and the “European Forum of Experts”.

The village of Tranchovitsa was chosen by Archbishop Philip Stanislavov as the first seat of the Nikopol Eparchy. Here he built one of the first schools in Bulgaria in 1650. For the school he wrote the first Cyrillic print book called “Abagar”.

There is a town hall, a community centre, shops and a restaurant in the village.

The lyceum bares the name of the great Bulgarian actor Grigor Vachkov – Grissa who was born in the village. The Humour and Satire Festivals are held every year in his honor..

The uniqueness and ecological importance of the park is a result of three biosphere reserves: Persinski marshes– a wet land of international importance; Milka and Kitka covering the islands of the archipelago are preserved floodplain forests. Eagles nest in the protected area “Kaikusha”.

– Another tourist attraction is the Devetashka Cave – one of the largest and most impressive caves in the country situated on the banks of Osam River 30 miles southwest of Tranchovitsa.
