THE VILLAGE OF BABOVO
Babovo is a village in northeast Bulgaria. The village is located in municipality of Slivo Pole, district of Ruse.
The village is located 55 miles from the large city Silistra. The village of Babovo is 109 miles from Dobrich and 127 miles from the sea and the city of Varna.
The village of Babovo is only 2 miles from the banks of the Danube river.
The population is approximately 459 people.
The village has a town hall, post office, community centre, restaurant, shops and a recreation area with a playground.
The local legend about the history of the village tells that it originated from an inn located on the road. The inn was owned by a grandmother ("baba"in Bulgarian) who was a very good housewife and cook. Over the years people began to settle around the inn, and hence the name of the village Babovo.
The village was renovated in the 1950s. Interest in the village is due to the quietness and beautiful nature of the area. In 2006 repair works were undertaken in order to improve the infrastructure of the village.
Tourism and natural landmarks:
- The orthodox church "Holy Trinity" in the village;
- The "Kalimok-Brashlen" nature park. In 2005 a project was launched to restore the swamps around the village. This was declared a Kalimok nature park and covers a large area around the villages of Babovo, Brashlen, Golyamo Vranovo and Ryahovo in the municipality of Slivo Pole and the town of Tutrakan including the villages of Nova Cherna, Staro Selo and Tsar Samuil. In Kalimok-Brashlen there are over 240 species of birds. In the protected area there is a rare marsh snowdrop listed in the red book of plant species;
- An ancient Thracian tomb has been discovered on the land of the village in the "Kalimok-Brashlen" nature park;
- The picturesque banks of the Danube river providing great opportunities for recreation and fishing.

MUNICIPALITY OF SLIVO POLE
The municipality of Slivo Pole is located in northeast Bulgaria and is one of the constituent municipalities of the district of Ruse.
The settlement of the municipality covers 11 villages: the villages of Babovo, Borisovo, Brashlen,
Golyamo Vranovo, Kosharna, Malko Vranovo, Ryahovo, Stambolovo, Cherechovo, Yudelnik and the administrative centre – Slivo Pole which is 15 miles from the city of Ruse.
The population in the municipality is about 11700 people.
There are 3 schools in the municipality located in the town of Slivo Pole, the village of Ryahovo and in the village of Golyamo Vranovo.
The main road II-21 passes through the municipality connecting the cities of Ruse and Silistra.
The good geographical location and the developed transport infrastructure make the municipality of Slivo Pole an attractive and promising area for investments.
The largest biofuel factory in the Balkans is located in the town of Slivo Pole.
Tourism and natural landmarks:
The territory of the municipality includes part of the largest protected area in Bulgaria - the "Kalimok-Brashlen protected area". The "Kalimok-Brashlen" is located on the banks of the Danube river between the cities of Ruse and Silistra and includes several Danube islands.
This has been declared a protected area in order to protect one of the few remaining Danube wetlands. Important and rare plants grow on the territory of Kalimok-Brashlen. The area is suitable for ecotourism.
The Aleko island is along the Danube river. It ranks 7th in size among the Bulgarian islands. It is 200-300 metres from the Danube lowland coast and 2 miles north of the town of Slivo Pole. The island is 4.6 miles in length and has a width of 0.4 miles. The island was formed by river sediments with alluvial soils. The eastern part of the island falls in the protected area "Aleko-Telika".
The Lipnik forest park is located near the village of Nikolovo. It is located in a huge forest
of linden trees - hence the name. This is the largest forest park in Bulgaria.

** The natural landmark “Orlova Chuka” cave is located on the left shore of the Cherni Lom river and is the 2nd longest cave in Bulgaria (13 438 m in length). ** The Lipnik forest park: the park covers a large area used for recreation and sport 12 km east of Ruse. There are country houses, restaurants, artificial lakes, a hotel, a sports base and a camping site in the park. This is a wonderful place for fishing, water sports, walking or just enjoying your day. The villages in the region attract tourists with the picturesque nature, the rock landscape and the breath-taking views. The surrounding area offers different ways to spend your free time and to enjoy the beauty of the region. The closest ski resort to Ruse is in "Uzana" the geographic centre of Bulgaria 28 miles from Veliko Tarnovo. There are several hotels in the resort which provide tourism and good conditions for relaxing in the quiet and calm atmosphere of the mountain. The surrounding sites of Uzana are ideal for rock climbing. In the nearby open-air ethnographic museum Etara" people learn more about Bulgarian crafts. The "Sokolski monastery" is situated a few miles from Uzana.
