SUHINDOL & REGION

Suhindol Municipality is situated in North-Central Bulgaria, part of Veliko Tarnovo District. Its position in the middle of the Danubian Plain creates excellent conditions for growing wine grapes. The local co-operative "Gamza" is famous for producing wines from the local vine with the same name. In addition, Suhindol winemakers craft Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, as well as a local variety "Dimyat". The town's proximity to a large dam on the Rositsa river and to the foothills of the Balkan Mountains make it a favourable tourist destination. The Rositza River near this town is known to hold "som" or European Catfish and some of them reach lengths of over 2 meters, especially the ones that live in the dam Alexandar Stamboliiski.

Suhindol is one of the most well-known and wealthiest historical Bulgarian settlements. It is known as Bulgarian Champagne by the lovers of Bacchus. According to archeologists of the Veliko Turnovo's museum, signs of human settlement in the area date to the Neolithic (New Stone) age - approx. 6000 years B.C. They have dated remains of domiciles, captured springs, ceramic fragments, jewellery, household items (hammers, woodworking instruments and bowls) and there is evidence of settlement and activity throughout the centuries. Suhindol has existed as a town for over a century. According to the archaeologist Polichronii Sirku who visited the town in 1878, a wealthy Roman village existed in the vicinity. Folk tales tell that the town is ancient, however, the age it is not established with any certainty. In the area of "Seltze" there are remnants of a settlement dating back to the 2nd century and in the neighborhood of "Drachevo" a medieval fort known as "Diritza" existed. The ancient name of Suhindol was "Seoundal".

VELIKO TURNOVO & REGION

The Historical Veliko Turnovo, located on the famous "Yantra River" (the 3rd longest Bulgarian tributary of the Danube River) is one of the most seeked destinations for tourists in Bulgaria.

Situated at the foot of Stara Planina Mountains in North Central Bulgaria, it attracts many tourists due to its unique architecture and history. The houses, stacked one above the other, situated on the sloppy hills of the city show a remarkable, unique architectural style.

Even as an ancient city, Veliko Turnovo has modern and original bars, eateries and shops as well as the ultra modern Grand Central Mall (One of Bulgaria's largest), with a multiplex cinema, shops, atrium and kids play area, there is definitely something for everyone in the mall alone. Veliko Turnovo's museums are varied and show the history of the ancient city as well as present some relics of the past.

The closest ski resort is in "Uzana" (pics below), the geographic center of Bulgaria, located at about 28 miles from Veliko Turnovo. There are several hotels in the resort which provide tourism opportunities and good conditions for relaxation among the quiet and calm atmosphere of the mountain throughout the year. The surrounding sites of Uzana are suitable for spaleology and rock climbing. There are possibilities for cultural tourism in the region. In the nearby open-air "Ethnographic Museum Etara" people can learn more about Bulgarian crafts. The "Sokolski Monastery" is situated a few miles away from Uzana.

From its rich historical value, to its thriving modern nightlife and lush natural surroundings that provide many excellent opportunities for outdoor recreational activities,

Veliko Turnovo offers you everything you could ever want for the perfect holiday or day out!!
