THE VILLAGE OF MOGILINO The village of Mogilino is a village in northern Bulgaria and is located in the municipality of Dve Mogili district of Ruse. The village is 16 miles from the town of Byala 17 miles from the town of Dve Mogili 28 miles from the town of Polski Trambesh and very close to the city of Ruse – 37 miles. The village is approximately 173 miles from the capital city of Sofia and 115 miles from the city of Varna. The population of the village of Mogilino is around 150 residents. There is a village hall, a post office and an active community centre “Selsko sabujdane 1899” with a library, a church and a shop/bar. The Church of “St. Dimitar” in the village of Mogilino was built in 1882. The village has a healthcare office providing healthcare services by a medical team from the city of Ruse consisting of a physician, a dentist, a feldsher (“physician assistant”) and a nurse. Up until 1934 when it was named Mogilino, the name of the village was named Huydzhekii. In the period 1955-1988, the village was called Zahari Stoyanovo in honour of the famous Bulgarian revolutionary and writer Zahari Stoyanov who was a teacher at the local school briefly in the late 19th century. However, due to the fact that several other villages in the country were also named the same after 1989 the village was once again called Mogilino. The village fair, which takes place annually on November 7th, is one of the most important dates in the village’s social calendar. People return from other parts of the country and the world to reunite with their families for a day of fun, memories and to honour their roots. The local people also traditionally celebrate the Day of Saint Trifon, the patron saint of vine growers and wine with an annual folk feast. This really is a property with potential !!
MUNICIPALITY OF DVE MOGILI The municipality of Dve Mogili is located in northern Bulgaria and is one of the constituent municipalities of the district of Ruse. The settlement network of the municipality covers 12 villages: the villages of Baniska, Batishnitsa, Bazovets, Karan Varbovka, Katselovo, Mogilino, Ostritsa, Chilnov, Pomen, Pepelina, Shirokovo and the administrative centre – Dve Mogili. It is located 20 miles south of Ruse.
The municipality of Dve Mogili has 2 municipal schools, 1 public school, 2 kindergartens, 11 local community centres and 12 churches. The population in the municipality is about 9382 inhabitants. The main landmarks in the municipality are: The “Orlova Chuka” Cave 6 miles east of the town of Dve Mogili and only 1 mile north of the village of Pepelina in the rocky gorge of the Cherni Lom river. This is one of the most interesting caves in Bulgaria. Since 1963 it has been declared a natural landmark and in 1978 it has been an archaeological monument of culture and national importance. The cave is formed in limestone deposited at the bottom of the former Sarmatian Sea. Cave galleries were shaped much later as a result of the karst processes that took place through the Quaternary. Here were found skeletons of bears, spearheads, flint scrapers, a tower, and pieces of clay vessels from the Eneolithic Age. The total length of the cave galleries is more than 8438 miles. This makes the cave the second largest in length in Bulgaria after the Duhlata cave. The cave is inhabited by about 10,000 bats. Near the Orlova Chuka cave is a hut. The area is dotted with coniferous groves and beautiful meadows. It offers excellent conditions for rock climbing, orientation, green school, archery, horseback riding, interesting eco paths and BBQs. There is a bar and a terrace with 70 seats;
The House Philip Totyu Museum in Dve Mogili is dedicated to the prominent figure of the Bulgarian National Liberation Movement. In the house in Dve Mogili, Philip Totyu spent the last years of his life after returning to Bulgaria after six years in a Romanian prison. In a separate room is an exhibition of the personal belongings of Philip Totyu: a clock, cane, rifle, cheetah flag and photographs and documents about his life and activity. In the other 3 rooms, the interior of an old Balkan house was restored with original items from the time when the voivoda lived;
In all the settlements of the municipality there are monuments related to the historical memory of the people and the perpetuation of the fighters’ heroism for freedom and independence; The Cherven Fortress. Cherven is one of the most significant Bulgarian cities of the Second Bulgarian State. Cherven is an archaeological site with a significant contribution to the study of medieval Bulgarian culture. The three-story fortress tower from the 14th century is completely preserved; The Monastery of “St. Marina” is located 1 mile southwest of the village of Karan Varbovka. The road is asphalted and passes through the village itself. The monastery was founded in the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, but during the fall of Bulgaria under Ottoman rule it was destroyed. Nowadays, the monastery operates all year round. It's a must-visit place!

The Rusenski Lom river valley along with the tributaries Beli (White), Malki (Little) and Cherni (Black) Lom is a unique world in itself and shows remote past history. Part of the valley was proclaimed a Natural Park. The park is located about 20 km to the southwest of Ruse. The park was created in 1970 with the purpose of preserving the canyons of the three rivers and historical landmarks.
