VILLAGE OF OBEDINENIE
The most ancient people from this land were Thacians. This was descovered from the Roman
inscriptions found in the ruins of the castle called "Kaleto" near Obedinenie. The
castle used to be on a main road connecting Nicopolis Ad Istrum and Nove - important city's in
Roman province Misia.
In the Middle Ages Bulgarians lived in Obedinenie. There are ruins of buildings near the
village.
At time of Bulgarian independency from the Turks - 1878 - the village had two parts. The south part
which was bigger and the smaller north with 54 houses.
The legend states that the village was founded in 1770.
The other legend is that Grandpa Belcho looked for a good place for agriculture with
fresh water. He found it in Obedinenie. Belcho took the permission for this place from the
local Turk leader Abdullah Aga in 1805. The first settler was very good builder and carpenter.
Many Bulgarians then moved to the village. They established two villages
- Mekish and Tencha. Mekish means soft wood which grew in the area. Tencha means turbulent
spring.
In 1835 there were many Bulgarians living here and they needed a church. But at that time it was almost impossible
to get a permission to build a church because of the law. Some brave Bulgarians tried to start
to build at night but the next day their work was destroyed. Finally priest Nikola managed to get
permission for building a church from Vidin's Turk leader who traveled near Tencha and
Mekish. The first orthodox church was build in 1839 in Mekish. It existed until 1908 when there was a new one built
in it's place. The new church is bigger and call "St. Paraskeva". It was sanctified on
25.10.1909 from Veliko Turnovo's bishop Antim. In 1873 in Tencha was built the church "Archangel
Michail" which is still there.
The first school was founded in 1856 - 22 years before Bulgarian Independency. It existed until 1892
when the new church was built. In 1929 the High school in Obedinenie was opened.
The two villages - Tencha and Mekish developed very fast and soon they were almost a united
whole. In 1923 the two villages had 280 houses with 1400 residents. The most common style of
building is the stone brickwork.
The first water-main in the village was build in 1928. In the same year the first
telephone line was installed.
From 1941 to 1947 the name of the two villages was "Prince Simeon" the name of Bulgarian
crown prince who was Bulgarian prime minister from 2001 to 2005. Thermal water
Here are some of the characteristics of the Obedinenie's thermal water:
The water springs out from a depth of 1250m, and has a hyper-thermal origin and temperature of
43 degrees Celsius with a slight alkaline reaction. The water has a very high
mineralization and is used for healing a number of diseases of the bones and joints /
the peripheral nervous system / the digestive system and for the immune system.
