THE VILLAGE OF PATRESH
The village is located in the middle of the Danubian Plain northwest and 27 miles from
the historic City of Veliko Tarnovo and 4 miles from the north of the
town of Pavlikeni. The small village has a big history and was called Patreshnitsa before being renamed Patresh.
The Village of Patresh is located in the Municipality of Pavlikeni - District of Veliko Tarnovo.
Patresh is located on three hills with 2 small rivers.
The rivers under the village were the start of the small Elia River
leading to the Yantra River.
These rivers are very important for the village as around them are built stoned fountains and wells. The rivers separate the village in to 3 parts: north - middle and south. The north part is called Batashka and the middle part is called THE MIDDLE ONE strangely enough ! The south part is named Daskotska.
There are 2 main roads in Patresh- one is for the town of Pavlikeni and the second
one is on the east side of Patresh leading to the town of Polski Trambesh.
The village has a population of around 450 people.
Patresh is in Dolna Mizia where items from roman villages were discovered from the 2nd and 3rd
centuries. There is a historical museum in Pavlikeni displaying these items.
Near the village are the following landmarks:
- In 2015 the village won the project “Mestni initsiativi”. The project was inspired by Roman times and a building was developed to reflect this close to the town hall;
- Musinska Cave – located in the village of Musina 14 miles from Patresh. The cave is 382 metres long and fully mapped by cavers;
- The Historical Museum in the town of Pavlikeni - the museum keeps a very interesting
exhibition - the Eternal calendar. It was created 140 years ago from an idea of Father
Matthey Probrajenski and developed by a famous master woodcarver from the town of Tryavna;
- The bell-tower in the town of Byala Cherkva - one of the many cultural sights of
the town. Only 6 miles from the village of Patresh. The bell-tower is 25 metres high and the working clock was made in 1929.

SUHINDOL - PAVLIKENI - SEVLIEVO REGION
SUHINDOL
The Municipality of Suhindol is located in Northern Bulgaria and is one of the
municipalities of the District of Veliko Tarnovo.
The municipality has six settlements with a total population of about 2 739 people.
The settlements are Suhindol (municipality centre) and the villages:
Byala Reka, Koevtsi, Gorsko Kalugerovo, Gorsko Kosovo and Krasno Gradishte.
The position in the middle of the Danubian Plain has excellent conditions for growing
wine grapes. The local co-operative "Gamza" is famous for producing wines from the local vine of the same name. In addition Suhindol winemakers craft Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon and a local variety "Dimyat".
The town's proximity to a large dam on the Rositsa river and to the foothills of
the Balkan Mountains make it a popular tourist destination. The Rositsa river near
the town is known to hold "Som" or European Catfish with some of them reaching lengths of
over 2 metres in the Alexandar Stamboliiski Dam.
Suhindol is one of the best well known and wealthiest historical Bulgarian settlements. It is called 'Bulgarian Champagne' by lovers of Bacchus. According to archeologists from the Veliko Tarnovo museum signs of human settlement in the area date to the Neolithic (New Stone) age - approx. 6000 years B.C. They have dated remains of domiciles and looked at evidence of settlement and activity throughout the centuries. Suhindol has existed as a town for over a century. According to the archaeologist Polichronii Sirku who visited the town in 1878 a wealthy Roman village existed in the vicinity. Folk tales say that the town is ancient. However the age it is not established with any certainty. In the area of "Seltze" there are remnants of a settlement dating back to the 2nd century and in the neighbouring "Drachevo" a medieval fort known as "Diritza" existed. The ancient name of Suhindol was "Seoundal".
PAVLIKENI
The Municipality of Pavlikeni is situated in the North-Central region of the country and occupies the west-central part of the District of Veliko Tarnovo.
The municipality has 20 settlements with a total population of about 24 976 people.
The Town of Pavlikeni is situated in the central part of the Danubian Plain 2 miles north of the Rositsa river and close to the Karaisen Lake - located close to the cities of Veliko Tarnovo, Levski, Sevlievo and Byala.
The Town of Pavlikeni is not far from the mountains which offer great outdoor activities
and sporting opportunities all year round – skiing in the winter and hiking the in summer.
SEVLIEVO
The Municipality of Sevlievo is situated in central northern Bulgaria at the crossroads
between Pleven, Veliko Tarnovo and Gabrovo. The Corridor E-71 is close to Sevlievo providing
excellent transport links.
The municipality is one of the most developed in Bulgaria.
The town has excellent transport links to the important commercial and cultural centres at Veliko Tarnovo, Gabrovo and Pleven. The central bus station in Sevlievo has buses linking all parts of Bulgaria.
Sevlievo has opportunities for tourism: the town has landmarks that attract tourists all year.
Sevlievo hosts national / international festivals and celebrations including the International Band Festival and the traditional Festival of the Story. Each year the town holds a freestyle wrestling tournament in memory of Dan Kolov.
Some of the biggest landmarks in the municipalities and the region are:
- The historical museum in the town of Pavlikeni established in 1978.
The museum preserves / promotes / researches and keeps the cultural and historical heritage
of the settlements in the region. More than 22,000 cultural monuments are stored in the museum. The museum has seven exhibitions – ancient ceramic - art gallery - archeology - renaissance -ethnography - new history and temporary exhibitions.
- The ancient ceramic centre near the town of Pavlikeni dates back to 1971. A furnace for the extraction of household ceramics dating from the Roman era was discovered near the town. A total of 8 furnaces were later found.
- The Pavlikeni zoo. The zoo has 119 animals and 38 species. The park has a children's playground and is worth a family visit.
- The historical museum of Byala Cherkva preserves the cultural and historical
heritage of the region. The first exhibition in the museum was opened in 1976 on the 100th anniversary of the April uprising. On the first floor of the museum you will see documents, books, weapons, tools, costumes and more. The second floor has a gallery with nearly 100 items of painting, graphics and sculpture;
- The medieval city "Hotalich" located on the hill (Krushevski) on the north side
of Sevlievo. It was discovered by chance in the last century. After excavation
archaeologists discovered several medieval towns on top of one another. There are
also several churches from different eras located at both ends of the
medieval city;
- The Sevlievo clock tower built in 1777 is one of the cultural monuments
of the town. Years after its construction the tower was restored but its appearance remains the same;
- The motor range Sevlievo located 5 miles from the town has become an international arena for motorcycle races at the highest level for the past 10 years;
- The Alexander Stamboliiski dam was built in 1954 and was the first large dam in
Bulgaria. The dam wall is built on a German project created before the Second
World War. The dam is built on the site of the village of Bara. When the water dips
traces of buildings and the cross of the village church can be seen. The dam is suitable for sailing, fishing and camping.
