THE VILLAGE OF TRANCHOVITSA
The village of Tranchovitsa is a village in northern Bulgaria and located in the municipality of Levski - district of Pleven.
The village is in the central part of the Danube plain at the turning of the Osam river. Most of Tranchovitsa is situated on the slopes of high hills facing the Osam river. The Osam river provides excellent opportunities for recreation and amateur fishing.
Today, about 578 people live in the village of Tranchovitsa.
The village of Tranchovitsa is the holder of the Golden Print Award for a unique European settlement. This distinction is
given to certain European cities and villages because of ancient historical heritage and unique natural resources. The award was presented by the “Official Representation of Unique Settlements in Europe” and the “European Forum of Experts”.
The village of Tranchovitsa was chosen by Archbishop Philip Stanislavov as the first seat of the Nikopol Eparchy. Here he
built one of the first few schools in Bulgaria and which was in 1650. He also wrote the first Cyrillic print book called “Abagar”.
There is a town hall, community centre, shops and a restaurant close to the house. The school and kindergarten are in the village of Malchika.
The lyceum bears the name of the great Bulgarian actor Grigor Vachkov – Grissa born in the village. In his honour, every year Humor and Satire Festivals are held.
Football has a 70-year history – Botev FC continues today.
On the territory of Tranchovitsa is a dairy which produces real white-brined cheese.
The cultural and natural landmarks:
– Two Catholic churches - “St. Michael’s Church” was built in 1874 with donations by local residents and people from Poland and other Catholic countries.
– A beautiful natural landmark to visit are the Krushuna waterfalls in the Maarata area (25 miles).
This is the biggest water cascade in the country and is rich in plants and animal species. For the convenience of tourists, an eco-trail was built, which allows you to enjoy the exquisite sight, inspired by the crystal water and fresh-green vegetation of the area.
– natural park “Persina” covers the 19 Belene Islands, is another landmark (25 miles north). The
uniqueness and ecological importance of the park have three biosphere reserves: Persinski marshes – a wetland of international importance inhabited by numerous colonies of waders; Milka and Kitka, covering
the eponymous islands of the archipelago are preserved floodplain forests (white willow and poplar). Pairs of eagles nest here – a rare species, included in The ” Red Data Book of the Republic of Bulgaria ” and in The book ” The European Red List of Birds ” and Protected area “Kaikusha”.
– A tourist attraction is the Devetashka cave – one of the largest and most impressive caves in the country situated
on the banks of the Osam river about 30 miles southwest of Tranchovitsa.

MUNICIPALITY OF LEVSKI
The municipality of Levski is located in the central part of the Danubian plain (in the Touchenishko-Dolnoosamski region) and it is a constituent part of the district of Pleven.
Levski is bounded to the north by the municipalities Nikopol and Belene, to the south by Letnitsa, to the east by Svishtov and Pavlikeni, and to the west by the municipality of Pordim.
The municipal centre is the Town of Levski. The terrain in the municipality is predominantly flat. The climate is moderately continental and favourable for grain and industrial crops and vegetable and fruit growing.
Some historical monuments of national significance were discovered near the villages of Malchika, Izgrev and Strejerovo.
The tumulus 2 miles from the village of Malchika is known for one of the earliest Latin inscriptions on the sacrificial altar dating from the 6th century BC.
The ancient necropolis, the tumuli in the village of Izgrev and the rock in the Sveta Troitsa (Holy Trinity) located northwest of the village of Stezherovo are also listed as finds of national significance.
The areas alongside the Osam river banks are very interesting. They feature diverse flora and fauna and are the natural habitat of waterfowl and migratory birds. The old riverbed is very well preserved on the land of Balgarene.

PLEVEN & REGION
Pleven is the 7th most populous city in Bulgaria. Well known as a major economic centre of the Bulgarian
northwest and central north and the 3rd largest city of northern Bulgaria after Varna and Ruse.
Located in the northern part of the country it is the administrative centre of the district of Pleven and of the subordinate municipality of Pleven.
Pleven is located in an agricultural region in the very heart of the Danubian plain the historical region of Moesia surrounded by low limestone hills, the Pleven Heights. The city's central location in northern Bulgaria defines its importance as a big administrative, economic, political, cultural and transport centre. Pleven is located about 100 miles from the capital City of Sofia, approximately 195 miles west of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and about 30 miles south of the Danube river. The river Vit flows near the town and the tiny Tuchenitsa river crosses it.
The regional historical museum in Pleven is a very popular tourist attraction while the Svetlin Rusev
Donative exhibition situated in the former public baths, exhibits work by Bulgarian artists and noted Western European art figures like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, and Renato Guttuso. The Ivan Radoev dramatic theatre is the centre of theatrical life in Pleven.
Pleven is often regarded as an important centre of sports in Bulgaria. The sports school in Pleven is thought of as one of the most prominent in the country. Pleven is also famous for its Kaylaka (where the ruins of the
Storgosia fortification can be found) and the Skobelev parks. The latter is home to the Pleven Panorama and is
situated at the original location of the battle during the Russo-Turkish War.
The district of Pleven is crossed from south to north by the rivers Iskar, Vit and Osam. The river valleys are separated by limestone plateaus.
