THE VILLAGE OF PEPELINA
Pepelina is a village in the Central part of Northern Bulgaria.
It is part of Municipality of Dve mogili, District of Ruse.
The location is 21 miles south of Ruse, 3 miles south-east of Dve mogili,
12 miles north-east of Borovo and 20 miles north-west of Opaka.
It is about 165 miles north-east of Sofia and about 120 miles north-west of Varna.
The village spreads out the Danube plain
in the picturesque canyon of Rusenski Lom Natural Park.
The sea altitude is 113m. It nestles in Cherni Lom river valley surrounded by high rocks.
The village has a mayor, a small cow farm offering dairy products, a breeding pond and guest houses.
The village is provided with electricity / water and communication equipment.
Health services and education centres are in the municipal centre - Dve mogili.
Regular bus transportation serves the village.
LANDMARKS AND TOURISM
Pepelina is one of the smallest villages in Ruse Region.
It is very beautiful and tranquil. In its settlement is the second
longest cave in Bulgaria - Orlova chuka.
The cave attracts tourists from all over Bulgaria.
In close proximity are - the medieval town of Cherven / Ivanovo rock churches
and the rock monastery 'St Dimitar Basarbovski'.
The house-museum of the Bulgarian revolutionary Philip Totyo is in town of Dve mogili.
The Cherni Lom River is perfect for fishing.
'Ayazmoto' forest park is situated in the settlement of Karan Varbovka (8 miles).
The park occupies 3483 decares. It has beautiful nature and mineral water.
'St Marina' monastery and the only mineral spring in Ruse Region are located here.
The Town of Dve Mogili is in the eastern part of the Danube plain.
Infrastructure
Dve mogili has a municipal building / police station / post office / church / a polyclinic / emergency medical service / secondary school and a professional agriculture high school.
The town is set on both sides of the railway line Ruse-Gorna Oryahovitsa. The directions are Ruse-Gorna Oryahovitsa and Ruse-Sofia. The bus station connects the town with the neighboring municipalities and the towns of Ruse, Byala and Popovo.
Tourism
Tourists can visit the Monument and House-museum of Philip Totyu in the centre of the town. Philip Totyu was a Bulgarian revolutionary of the Bulgarian National Revival period and the leader of an armed band of volunteers. His grave is well-preserved and has been turned into a monument.
In the summer of 2009 the local open-air theatre was renovated and opened.
A traditional folk dance fair takes place every spring in the town. The participants come from different countries - Bulgaria, Romania, Cyprus, Turkey, Serbia, etc.
An interesting natural landmark is Orlova Chuka cave which is the second largest cave in Bulgaria. It is located in the gorge of Cherni Lom River - 4 km away from the town.
Another place of interest is Natural Park 'Rusenski Lom' which is an attractive combination of caves, rock formations, historical monuments and has rich animal and plant variety.
Ruse is the biggest Bulgarian river port on the Danube River, serving an important part of the international trade of the country. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The Nature around the city of Ruse ** Natural Park “Rusenski Lom” — The Rusenski Lom River Valley along with its tributaries Beli (White), Malki (Little) and Cherni (Black) Lom represents a unique world in itself in which the amazing nature is entwined into Bulgarian history. Part of the valley was proclaimed a Natural Park. The park is located at about 20 km to the south-west from Ruse. It was created in 1970 with the purpose of preserving the canyons of the three rivers and historical landmarks. The rivers have created incredibly beautiful gorges into the limestone rock foundation. ** Natural landmark “Orlova Chuka” Cave - located on the left shore of the Cherni Lom river. It's the 2nd longest cave in Bulgaria (13 438 m in length) representing a complex labyrinth of interweaving tunnels. ![]() ![]() ![]() ** Lipnik Forest Park: the park is a big site for recreation, sports, tourism, sunbathing and all other kinds of entertainment situated 12 km east of Ruse. There are country houses, restaurants, artificial lakes, a hotel, a zoo, a sports base and a camping site. This is a wonderful place for fishing, water sports, walking and just enjoying the day. ![]() ![]() ![]() The villages in the region are appealing to tourists with the picturesque nature, the rock landscape and the breath-taking views with plenty of opportunities for hiking, riding and biking experiences. The surrounding area offers different ways to spend your free time and to enjoy the beauty of the region. The closest ski resort to Ruse is in "Uzana" (pics below), the geographic center of Bulgaria, located about 28 miles from Veliko Turnovo. There are several hotels in the resort which provide tourism opportunities and great conditions for relaxation among the quiet and calm atmosphere of the mountain throughout the year. The surrounding sites of Uzana are suitable for spaleology and rock climbing. There are possibilities for cultural tourism in the region. In the nearby open-air "Ethnographic Museum Etara" people can learn more about Bulgarian crafts. The "Sokolski Monastery" is situated a few miles away from Uzana.
