The town of Suhindol is a town in north central Bulgaria part of the district of Veliko Tarnovo.

The position in the middle of the Danubian plain has excellent conditions for growing wine grapes. The local co-operative "Gamza" is famous for producing wines from the local vine with the same name. In addition Suhindol winemakers craft Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon plus a local variety "Dimyat".

The town's proximity to a large dam on the Rositsa river and to the foothills of the Balkan mountains make it a popular tourist destination. The Rositsa river near the town is known to hold "Som" or European catfish with some reaching lengths of over 2 metres in the Alexandar Stamboliiski dam.

Suhindol is one of the most well known and wealthiest historical Bulgarian settlements. According to archeologists from the Veliko Tarnovo museum signs of human settlement in the area date to the Neolithic (New Stone) age - approx. 6000 years B.C. They have dated remains of domiciles, captured springs, ceramic fragments, jewellery, household items (hammers, woodworking instruments and bowls) and there is evidence of settlement and activity throughout the centuries. Suhindol has existed as a town for over a century. According to the archaeologist Polichronii Sirku who visited the town in 1878 a wealthy Roman village existed in the vicinity. Folk tales tell that the town is ancient. However the age is not established with any certainty. In the area of "Seltze" there are remnants of a settlement dating back to the 2nd century and in the neighborhood of "Drachevo" a medieval fort known as "Diritza" once existed. The ancient name of Suhindol was "Seoundal".

It's a must visit place!

VELIKO TARNOVO & REGION

The historical Veliko Tarnovo located on the famous "Yantra River" (the 3rd longest Bulgarian tributary of the Danube river) is one of the most popular destinations for tourists in Bulgaria.

Situated at the foot of Stara Planina mountains in north central Bulgaria, VT attracts tourists due to the unique architecture and history. The houses stacked one above the other, situated on the hills of the city have a remarkable, unique architectural style.

Often referred to as the “cty of the Tsars”, Veliko Tarnovo was the capital of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom in the Medieval era when it became a force to be reckoned with.

Probably the most popular tourist attraction, which is not only an iconic landmark and the symbol of the city of Veliko Tarnovo but also one of Bulgaria’s most beloved heritage sites, is the Tsarevets Fortress. Dominating the entire skyline of Veliko Tarnovo, Tsarevets is a medieval stronghold located on a hill with the same name. It served as the Second Bulgarian Empire’s primary fortress and strongest bulwark between 1185 and 1393, housing the Royal and the patriarchal palaces.

The fortress is also famous for the Sound and Light audiovisual show which started in 1985. The audiovisual show is an attraction carried out in the evening that uses three lasers, variegated lights, dramatic music and church bells to tell the story of the fall of Tarnovo to the Ottomans, as well as other key moments of the history of Bulgaria.

Situated to the northwest of the Tsarevets Fortress is the hill Trapezitsa which in the past was the fortified quarter of the capital city of Tarnovgrad. Naturally protected by high cliffs, Trapezitsa had solid fortification walls following the uneven cliff edge about 80 decares in size. Parts of the defense system of the fortress, a military complex and 18 churches were localised during archaeological excavation, which continues to be carried out today.

The interactive display in the newly set up Trapezitsa architectural heritage centre and museum shows the splendour of the capital city of Tarnovgrad and the Second Bulgarian Kingdom and visitors can learn more about the customs and daily life of both the nobility and ordinary people during that time.

Another place to explore in the city where you can feel its true spirit is the Samovodska Charshiya Complex situated in the Old Town. In the 19th century, farmers and artisans from the village of Samovodene came to sell their goods. The area also known as the Crafts Street, underwent serious restoration in the mid-1980s to recreate the bustling marketplace of the early 20th century. In the beautifully renovated houses from the pre and post liberation period, visitors will find workshops for pottery, weapons, copper working, wood carving, weaving, icon painting, Turkish sweets and a bakery.

Even though it is an old city Veliko Tarnovo has modern and original bars, eateries and shops as well as the ultra modern Grand Central Mall (One of Bulgaria's largest) with a multiplex cinema, shops, atrium and a childrens play area. There is something for everyone in the mall alone. Veliko Tarnovo's museums are varied and show the history of the ancient city and relics from the past.

The closest ski resort is in "Uzana" (pics below) the geographic centre of Bulgaria is about 28 miles from Veliko Tarnovo. There are several hotels in the resort which provide tourism opportunities and ideal conditions for relaxing in the calm atmosphere of the mountain throughout the year. The surrounding sites of Uzana are suitable for rock climbing. There are possibilities for cultural tourism in the region. In the nearby open-air "Ethnographic museum Etara" people learn more about Bulgarian crafts. The "Sokolski Monastery" is situated a few miles from Uzana.

From the rich historical value, to the thriving modern nightlife and beautiful natural surroundings there are excellent opportunities for recreational activities,

Veliko Tarnovo offers you everything you could ever want for the perfect holiday or day out!!
