BELENE & REGION

Petokladentsi is located only 8 miles from the Town of Belene situated on the right bank of the Danube River and close to the City of Svishtov. Belene was proclaimed a town in 1964 and this is celebrated every year in the first week of September with a market and cultural events. The "Persina Natural Park" is found in the Belene Municipality. The Belene Danube archipelago consists of 19 islands falling within the borders of the municipality and the park. One of them is called the "Island of Persin" - the largest Bulgarian Danube Island which the Natural Park was named after; the island is 15 km in length and 6 km wide. Also known as "Island of Belene" it is formed by the Danube River splitting into two branches passing to the north and south of the island.

The island is an important habitat for a number of threatened bird species. Several protected areas are situated in this region. Tourist attractions are: a bird-watching point on Golyama Barzina Island; a place for recreation and fishing near the firth; a cycling route from Persina enterprise to Kaykousha plant and a fishermen settlement in the Hissarlaka locality.

SVISHTOV & REGION

The Svishtov Municipality is situated in the northernmost part of the Veliko Turnovo district and borders through the Danube River and the Republic of Romania plus the following municipalities: Polski Trambesh in the Veliko Turnovo district / Tsenovo in the Ruse district and Levski in the Pleven district. This is where the southernmost point of the Danube river is located, which means this is the shortest way from the Danube river through Stara Planina and the Valley of the Maritsa river to the Aegean Sea.

Svishtov is one of the leading industrial and agricultural centres in the Veliko Turnovo district with a mixed type of economy. In the area there are 120 official archaeological, art, and architectural monuments of local and national significance. The "Town Museum of History" the "Ethnographic Museum" and the "Aleko Konstantinov House-Museum" are worth visiting.

PLEVEN & REGION

Pleven has the 7th highest population for a city in Bulgaria. It is well known as a major economic centre of the Bulgarian northwest and central north and the 3rd largest city of northern Bulgaria after Varna and Ruse. Pleven is the administrative centre of the Pleven district and the Pleven municipality.

Pleven is located in an agricultural region in the very heart of the Danubian plain - the historical region of Moesia surrounded by low limestone hills - the Pleven Heights. The city's central location in northern Bulgaria defines its importance as an administrative, economic, political, cultural and transportation centre. Pleven is about 100 miles from the capital City of Sofia, approximately 195 miles west of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and about 30 miles south of the Danube River. The River Vit flows near the town and the tiny Tuchenitsa River crosses it.

The Pleven Regional Historical museum is a very popular tourist attraction while the Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition situated in the former public baths exhibits works by Bulgarian artists and western European art figures including Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali and Renato Guttuso. The Ivan Radoev Dramatic Theatre is the centre of theatrical life in Pleven.

Pleven is regarded as an important centre of sport in Bulgaria. The sports school in Pleven is considered one of the most prominent in the country. Pleven is also famous for the Kaylaka (where the ruins of the Storgosia fortification are found) and the Skobelev parks. The later is home to the Pleven Panorama and is situated on the original location of the battle of the Russo-Turkish War.

The District of Pleven is crossed from south to north by the Rivers Iskar, Vit and Osam; the river valleys are separated by limestone plateaus.
