Food and Shopping in Bulgaria

Bulgarians like to shop for fresh fruit and vegetables at local supermarkets or at the small grocery shops in most neighbourhoods and villages. Fresh produce is grown locally, often organically, and is extremely tasty! Fish is plentiful and fresh along the coast. Bulgarians adore meat, with chicken, lamb and pork featuring heavily on most restaurant menus. Gigantic sausages and sashliks ( skewered meat with vegetables ) are typical fare in restaurants, although the best Bulgarian cuisine is reserved for the home. Pizza and burger restaurants are very popular, with a typical meal costing £2 - £5 with a glass of wine or beer.

There are more and more supermarkets opening in Bulgarian towns and cities, with chains such as Piccadilly, Mambo, Billa and Metro providing a wide choice of domestic and imported goods. An average weekly grocery bill for a couple is about £20, but buying expensive imported brands will increase your spend.

As a foreigner, you will encounter language difficulties when shopping. Some products have English labels, but for buying fresh produce in a market you will need to learn a few simple Bulgarian words or you can prepare a Bulgarian shopping list before hand. As a last resort pointing and sign language usually work quite well too!

BEEF Kavarma Kebap

A typical and delicious Bulgarian dish

Ingredients for 3-4 people

400-500 g frying beef steak
1 onion
1 clove of garlic
1 glass of wine
3-4 tbsp of fat or oil
1 tbsp cornflour
1/2 cup beef stock
paprika, salt, pepper

How to cook

Cut the meat into strips and season with salt and pepper - leave for around half an hour. Heat the fat (or oil) in a pan and then brown the meat. Remove the beef  when done and using the same oil, fry the finely chopped onion for 2-3 minutes then add to the meat. Season with salt, pepper, paprika and gently stir to mix.

Add the stock, wine and the chopped garlic to the hot oil in the pan, bring to the boil, simmer for few minutes to reduce the sauce, then thicken with cornflour.

You can serve with mashed or roast potatoes using the sauce as gravy.

When you have finished have a glass or two of Zagorka and let someone else do the washing up.
