THE VILLAGE OF ASENOVO

Asenovo is a village in Northern Bulgaria, part of Nikopol Municipality - Pleven Province. It was founded in 1892 by Roman Catholic 203 households of Banat Bulgarians returning to Bulgaria from the Banat.

The village is located 24 km from Nikopol and 28 km from Pleven, on the main road between the two towns. Asenovo's design features straight, narrow streets. Most of the houses have a specific Banat Bulgarian architecture, being narrow and long towards the yard and having a more sharp-pointed roof than the typical Eastern Orthodox Bulgarian houses.

Asenovo is named after the Medieval Bulgarian Asen dynasty. The village has a Catholic church (of the Holy Trinity). Asenovo's Banat Folklore Group is known for winning a total of 18 gold medals at the 5th and 6th National Fair of Folk Art in Koprivshtitsa.

The village is well developed and provides all necessary amenities for living such as shops, post office, pubs, town hall, regular transport to nearby towns/cities etc.

It is situated in an area with breathtaking scenery, suitable for picnics and walks with fresh air and clean water.

You will find everything you need for peaceful and healthy living!!

NIKOPOL & REGION

The Municipality of NIKOPOL is situated in North-Central Bulgaria in the northeastern part of Pleven District. Its northern border is the Danube River. The Osam River flows through the Municipality. The Municipality is crossed by the Pleven - Cherkvitsa railway line.

Natural sights and monuments of culture in Nikopol Municipality include "The Elia fountain of 2 c." - monument of culture dating back to Roman times; "St. Petar I Pavel Medieval cross-vaulted church" - 14 c., monument of architecture of national importance; "Kaleto fortress" - archeological monument of the First and Second Bulgarian Kingdom; "Virgin Mary`s Assu church" - monument of culture of national importance; "Rock church in the Plavala locality" - remarkable landscape "Persina Natural Park" - encompasses the land of Nikopol town; "Dragash Voyvoda village"; and others.

The successful completion of the car ferry has added to the activity of the Town of Nikopol, and has spurred further activity including the opening of new restaurants and the town’s first hotel. Nikopol also serves as a port for tourist boats where tourists stop and have the opportunity to visit the nearby city of Pleven or spend the afternoon in Nikopol.

The 5th largest Nature Park in Bulgaria lies partially in Nikopol - Persina Natural Park. It is the only national park on the Danube River, and contains marshlands, over 200 species of birds, 475 species of plants, and 1,100 species of animals. Based on the importance and uniqueness, Persina Natural Park has been declared a Ramsar site.

Tourist attractions in Nikopol include the ruins of the medieval fortress, the richly-decorated 13th or 14th-century Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the rock-hewn Church of Saint Stephen, the Bulgarian National Revival Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God from 1840, the Elia water fountain with an immured Ancient Roman gravestone featuring an epitaph, and the Vasil Levski museum house.

PLEVEN & REGION

Pleven is the 7th most populous city in Bulgaria. Well known as a major economic centre of the Bulgarian Northwest and Central North and the 3rd largest city of Northern Bulgaria after Varna and Ruse. Located in the northern part of the country, it is the administrative centre of Pleven District.

Pleven is located in an agricultural region in the very heart of the Danubian Plain, the historical region of Moesia, surrounded by low limestone hills, the Pleven Heights. The city's central location in Northern Bulgaria defines its importance as a big administrative, economic, political, cultural and transport centre. Pleven is located about 100 miles away from the capital City of Sofia, approximately 195 miles west of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and about 30 miles south of the Danube River. The River Vit flows near the town and the tiny Tuchenitsa River crosses it.

The Pleven Regional Historical Museum is a very popular tourist attraction while the Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition, situated in the former public baths, exhibits works by Bulgarian artists as well as noted Western European art figures like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Renato Guttuso and many others. The Ivan Radoev Dramatic Theatre is the centre of theatrical life in Pleven.

Pleven is often regarded as an important centre of sports in Bulgaria. The sports school in Pleven is thought of as one of the most prominent in the country. Pleven is also famous for its Kaylaka (where the ruins of the Storgosia fortification can be found) and Skobelev parks. The later is home to the Pleven Panorama and is situated on the original location of the battle during the Russo-Turkish War.

The District of Pleven is crossed from south to north by the Rivers Iskar, Vit and Osam (in west-east order); the river valleys are separated by limestone plateaus.
