MUNICIPALITY OF NIKOPOL - DISTRICT OF PLEVEN NORTH WESTERN BULGARIA The Town of Nikopol is amphitheatrically situated along the slopes of several hills, on the high right bank of the Danube River, at the distance of 3km to the east of the mouth of the Osam River. It is situated 229km to the north-east of Sofia, 95km to the east of Oryahovo, 55km to the north-east of Pleven, 51km to the north-west of Svishtov, 25km to the north-east of Gulyantsi and 6km to the east of the railway station of Cherkovitsa. The town offers you all amenities needed for living such as bars, cafes, restaurants, town hall, banks, post office, police station, medical care, bus transport, ferry boat to Romania, etc etc etc!!! Some Landmarks: - The drinking-fountain of Elia (Syutliika) - built up during the 2nd century by the ordinary citizen of Rome Frontona; - Shishman’s fortress - remains from the fortress, defended by the last Bulgarian Tsar before the Turkish invasion - Ivan Shishman; - The Monument to the Russian soldiers who died during the Russian-Turkish War of Liberation; - The old St. Peter and Pavel Church - dates back to the 13th century.
THE PROPERTY One storey cosy house which consists of entrance hall/corridor with tiles, one room with a bathroom and another room. There is a traditional fireplace in the corridor. There is a BBQ area outside with a traditional tap made from stones and an outside toilet. There are also a few other taps in the garden and a basin for fish or turtles if you are an animal lover. There is a barn which cannot be used and needs to be knocked down and rebuilt - it's outlined in the plan of the property so you do not need permission if you decide to build up a new one. The Municipality of NIKOPOL is situated in North-Central Bulgaria in the northeastern part of Pleven District. Its northern border is the Danube River. The Osam River flows through the Municipality. The Municipality is crossed by the Pleven - Cherkvitsa railway line. Natural sights and monuments of culture in Nikopol Municipality include "The Elia fountain of 2 c." - monument of culture dating back to Roman times; "St. St. Petar I Pavel Medieval cross-vaulted church" - 14 c., monument of architecture of national importance; "Kaleto fortress" - archeological monument of the First and Second Bulgarian Kingdom; "Virgin Mary`s Assu church" - monument of culture of national importance; "Rock church in the Plavala locality" - remarkable landscape resulting from man and nature co-existence in harmony; "Persina Natural Park" - encompasses the land of Nikopol town; "Dragash Voyvoda village"; and others. ![]() ![]() The successful completion of the car ferry has added to the activity of the Town of Nikopol, and has spurred further activity including the opening of new restaurants and the town’s first hotel. Nikopol also serves as a port for tourist boats where tourists stop and have the opportunity to take a bus into the nearby city of Pleven, or spend the afternoon in Nikopol. The 5th largest Nature Park in Bulgaria lies partially in Nikopol - Persina Natural Park. It is the only national park on the Danube River, and contains marshlands, over 200 species of birds, 475 species of plants, and 1,100 species of animals. Based on the importance and uniqueness, Persina Natural Park has been declared a Ramsar site. Tourist attractions in Nikopol include the ruins of the medieval fortress, the richly-decorated 13th or 14th-century Church of Saints Peter and Paul, the rock-hewn Church of Saint Stephen, the Bulgarian National Revival Church of the Dormition of the Mother of God from 1840, the Elia water fountain with an immured Ancient Roman gravestone featuring an epitaph, and the Vasil Levski museum house.
Pleven is the 7th most populous city in Bulgaria. Well known as a major economic centre of the Bulgarian Northwest and Central North and the 3rd largest city of Northern Bulgaria after Varna and Ruse. Located in the northern part of the country, it is the administrative centre of Pleven District, as well as of the subordinate Pleven Municipality. Pleven is located in an agricultural region in the very heart of the Danubian Plain, the historical region of Moesia, surrounded by low limestone hills, the Pleven Heights. The city's central location in Northern Bulgaria defines its importance as a big administrative, economic, political, cultural and transport centre. Pleven is located about 100 miles away from the capital City of Sofia, approximately 195 miles west of the Bulgarian Black Sea Coast and about 30 miles south of the Danube River. The River Vit flows near the town and the tiny Tuchenitsa River crosses it. The Pleven Regional Historical Museum is a very popular tourist attraction while the Svetlin Rusev Donative Exhibition, situated in the former public baths, exhibits works by Bulgarian artists as well as noted Western European art figures like Pablo Picasso, Salvador Dali, Renato Guttuso and many others. The Ivan Radoev Dramatic Theatre is the centre of theatrical life in Pleven. Pleven is often regarded as an important centre of sports in Bulgaria. The sports school in Pleven is thought of as one of the most prominent in the country. Pleven is also famous for its Kaylaka (where the ruins of the Storgosia fortification can be found) and Skobelev parks. The later is home to the Pleven Panorama and is situated on the original location of the battle during the Russo-Turkish War.
