I lied! There is a third mode as well - Its called sitting under a tree all day drinking beer.

To be fair, Bulgarian builders can be hard workers but you do have to keep an eye on things. The cost of labour is cheap, about 25 lev a day, but the builders do need a push from time to time. I recommend getting a quote for the whole job, not paying a daily wage. When this has completed it must be submitted to the chief architect in the local municipality. Once the project has been approved the renovation work can begin. Communication with local workmen, if you are overseeing things yourself, can present problems.
